On <\/span>Wednesday, November 20, 2024<\/b>, from <\/span>13:15 \u2014 14:45 local time<\/b>, join us for a critical side event at <\/span>COP29<\/b> that focuses on the vital role of <\/span>Environmental Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs)<\/b> in advancing climate action and justice. As global leaders convene for COP29, EHRDs continue to be the frontline advocates for environmental preservation, despite facing unprecedented levels of violence, repression, and criminalization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the adoption of the <\/span>Paris Agreement<\/b> in 2015, more than <\/span>1,390 EHRDs<\/b> have lost their lives, many of them <\/span>Indigenous defenders<\/b>. Reports show that over a third of those murdered in 2022 belonged to Indigenous communities. These killings represent only a fraction of the challenges they face, which include harassment, restrictive laws, and stigmatization. It is within this context that this side event will explore strategies to strengthen the <\/span>recognition<\/b>, <\/span>protection<\/b>, and <\/span>participation<\/b> of EHRDs in global environmental decision-making, ensuring their rights are upheld in forums like COP.<\/span><\/p>\n

Multilateral frameworks such as the <\/span>Aarhus Convention<\/b>, the <\/span>Escaz\u00fa Agreement<\/b>, and the <\/span>UN Human Rights Council<\/b> have taken steps toward the protection of EHRDs. However, these efforts often remain fragmented and disconnected from national policy implementations. This event will highlight the need for stronger multilateral cooperation and a <\/span>human rights-centered approach<\/b> to environmental policy that unites efforts across regions and sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

This session will explore ways to balance the urgent need for sustainable energy transitions with the <\/span>non-negotiable<\/b> protection of human rights, especially for defenders in regions affected by critical mineral extraction.<\/span><\/p>\n
