As global leaders convene for COP29, EHRDs continue to be the frontline advocates for environmental preservation, despite facing unprecedented levels of violence, repression, and criminalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the adoption of the <\/span><b>Paris Agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2015, more than <\/span><b>1,390 EHRDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have lost their lives, many of them <\/span><b>Indigenous defenders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Reports show that over a third of those murdered in 2022 belonged to Indigenous communities. These killings represent only a fraction of the challenges they face, which include harassment, restrictive laws, and stigmatization. It is within this context that this side event will explore strategies to strengthen the <\/span><b>recognition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>protection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>participation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of EHRDs in global environmental decision-making, ensuring their rights are upheld in forums like COP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multilateral frameworks such as the <\/span><b>Aarhus Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Escaz\u00fa Agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><b>UN Human Rights Council<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have taken steps toward the protection of EHRDs. However, these efforts often remain fragmented and disconnected from national policy implementations.
