cambiaMO will participate in the SB60 Bonn Climate Change Conference in June 2024, advocating for a Global People’s Assembly—a deliberative process beyond existing forms of participation. Representing the CLIMAS project, cambiaMO aims to amplify the voices of marginalised communities, including land and environmental defenders, civil society representatives, women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals, Indigenous peoples, children and youth, people living with disabilities, and the elderly.
At the heart of the proposed People’s Assembly framework lies the mission to complement the UNFCCC Global Stocktake (GST) process, ensuring that grassroots perspectives directly inform global climate policy. Through local and regional assemblies culminating in a global assembly, the framework bridges local experiences with global deliberations, emphasising inclusivity and diverse representation. This structure facilitates broad stakeholder engagement at all levels, with a focus on inclusivity and the integration of diverse perspectives, particularly from marginalized communities and people in vulnerable situations
Side Event at SB60: Advancing Climate Action in the Nationally determined contributions (NDC) | A Global People’s Assembly to ensure that youth and grassroots perspectives and marginalised communities inform climate policy
Session Overview: This session will review existing structures for grassroots participation in UNFCCC processes, presenting experiences of activists and community representatives. It will illustrate how the current system fails to create space for genuine and inclusive participation and discuss how a People’s Assembly could address these gaps. The session will conclude by identifying next steps and ways in which stakeholders can contribute to moving this agenda forward.
- Speakers: The event will facilitate a dialogue among parties, civil society representatives, and other stakeholders, ensuring representation of key regions and impacted constituencies. Speakers will include representatives from UNFCCC, governments, future COP presidencies, NGOs, and grassroots initiatives.
